6 Simple Tips to Finding Happiness

What makes you happy?  There really is no secret to being happy, it’s inside you right now.  You just have to make a decision to not let outside factors influence you and then you can have happiness for as long as you live.

But in case you need a little assistance, here are a few steps you can take to begin learning how to make yourself happy.

  • As mentioned before to be happy is relatively easy, just decide you are going to be a happy person.  It really is that simple.  Choose to be happy, suffering is optional!

Once you make the choice to be happy you’ll be amazed how your world will change to accommodate what it is you want and you will find being a happy person much easier to do than you first thought.  Abraham Lincoln once said “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”1

  • A great way to be happy is to laugh.  Laughter has an amazing effect on the body, mind and spirit, raising us up when we feel down.  Watch a comedy, read a comic strip, stop and remember a really funny incident.  It doesn’t matter what it takes to get you laughing and smiling but once you do, you’ll see and feel an immediate change in your physiology.  It really is true that laughter is the best medicine.

  • Remember that no one or nothing can make you happy!  Your happiness isn’t dependent on outside factors, it’s all inside you right now.  Waiting until you get that raise or until you find your soul mate or get that brand new car in order to be happy may lead to disappointment.  What if those things don’t happen?  Or what if all but one happens?  If you make happiness a priority then life is much easier to handle.  Believe that you are the best person to make you happy.

  • Choose your words carefully.  The words we think and speak greatly affects our attitude. One of the things you may do is when someone asks you how you are doing and out of habit you respond “Okay” or “Hanging in there”.  But what if you responded with “I’m doing excellent” or “Outstanding” notice how your demeanor changes.  Just little changes like these in your daily habits can make a world of difference in your attitude.

  • Gratitude!  How can you not be happy or have a positive attitude when you give thanks.  And you do have so much for which to be thankful.  For example, the beautiful day outside; the clothes you wear; the food you eat; your eyes which allow you to read; the fact that you woke up this morning as opposed to the alternative.  There are numerous things for which you can give thanks.  And as you give thanks for all the wonderful things in your life, notice how that makes you feel.

  • Ask positive and empowering questions.  When you find yourself in a situation that didn’t go as you wanted, instead of asking “Why does this always happen to me?”, reframe the question.  Ask what lesson you can learn from this or what can you do different next time to get the result you desire. Learning to ask empowering questions will lead to positive results and a happier life.

There are many ways to find your happiness and maintain a positive attitude.  These are only a handful that I‘ve learned to use over the years.  But I’ve also learned the most important tip to ensure that I am always in a positive and happy state and that is that I am the only one who controls how I feel every single moment.  Remember, happiness is a choice and it’s yours for the taking.
