I have a sign that hangs in my home office with those exact words on it. When I first saw it I knew I had to buy it because it rang so true for me. Happiness truly is a choice. I decide what my mood is going to be on any given day. I decide if I’m going to let outside forces influence my mood and potentially rob me of my happiness.
The more I thought about it the more I realized how simple it really is. As a society we tend to want to make things complicated and the more complicated the more we stress out.
I have learned that if I want to be happy all I have to do is decide that I will be happy, simple as that. Now staying happy can be challenging at times especially with all the outside influences around us. But for me, if I just remember that nothing or no one can steal my happiness unless I make that choice to let them, then there is no reason for me not to be happy.
However I will admit that when I was in a daily work environment it was difficult to stay happy. There were days when I would feel the negativity as soon as I walked through the door. And coworkers, although most are well-meaning friends, contribute to the negativity with their complaints and gossip. I admit I can get caught up in this too but I have learned to recognize when I’m sliding down the path to the “dark side”.
One of the things that has helped me is reading books by what I consider to be some influential authors such as Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, and Bob Proctor to name a few. This has made a real difference in my life although in my case it didn’t happen overnight. When I first started reading and listening to Wayne Dyer about 6 years ago it didn’t seem to have any effect on me. But it wasn’t until about 10 months ago that what he was saying in his books really sunk in and started to make sense.
Since then I have seen my life and how I interpret it radically change. I no longer sit around and mope or cuss the powers that be because I was dealt a rotten hand in this game called life. I am more at peace with myself and I now understand that everything happens for a reason and we truly do attract when we have in our lives. As the happiness quote says it is a choice.
Suffice it to say that you can have happiness or anything else you want in your life because you have the power in you to accomplish this. I am doing it now so I am proof that it can be done.
